From this, it seems reasonable to assume that if one link to your website is good, ten must necessarily be better, and the more places you can find to link to you, the higher your own page will be. Unfortunately, it isn't quite this simple.
Besides just analysing backlinks, however, Google and other search engines also look at the sites that are linking to you. Low-quality sites—that is, sites who have few backlinks of their own or very little quality content—won't count for much. Similarly, sites whose only purpose is to generate links (known as "link farms") won't help your search engine rankings. In fact, they can actually get you blacklisted, or banned from search engines altogether.
Even within legitimate websites, backlinks from sites that rank higher themselves will help you more than sites with low rankings. A link from a legitimate, quality site that ranks #56 in a search for "office products", for example, may help your website a little, but it won't help it as much as a site that ranks #5. Similarly, a site that has 500 backlinks will do more good if it links to your site than one that only has 50 backlinks, or only has 5 backlinks.
The best way to get good, quality backlinks is to have solid, informative content that people actually want to link to. No amount of SEO wriggling in the world can make up for website value. Other things can help when the content is already in place, but they can't make up for a lack of it.
Ten backlinks from pages with low pagerank are good. But one link from a page with high pagerank is better. And ten backlinks from ten pages with high pagerank is best of all.
So be picky with the backlinks you seek. Avoid link farms, which can get your page dropped altogether. Look for quality backlinks—and get them with quality content.
