What Makes a Good SEO CV?
Over the past few years, the field of Search Engine Optimization has evolved from a little-known industry into an entire realm of professional activity. Search Engine Optimization professionals now command impressive salaries from some of the largest and most well-respected companies in the world as internet marketing and internet strategy play an increasingly important role in the way business is conducted.
For that reason, well-structured SEO CVs have become crucial to the SEO recruitment process. As more people vie for these high-paying, strategically significant roles, the competition has forced those without the requisite experience -- or, more importantly, without an understanding of how to present that experience -- to the bottom of the pool of desirable candidates.
An SEO CV is similar to a CV for any other job application process, but because the industry has not had time to mature, many job candidates are confused as to what information should be included in an SEO CV. This article aims to demystify the process of crafting an SEO CV and also to explain which key points recruiters are looking for when hiring into an SEO position.
What is an SEO CV?
A CV, or curriculum vitae, is essentially a list of a person's professional and academic accomplishments. It is similar to a resume save for the fact that it is longer and more comprehensive; while a resume is typically limited to one page, a CV tends to include all relevant professional experience as well as publications, industry awards, and academic certification.
An SEO CV is therefore a list of professional accomplishments for use in applying to jobs related to Search Engine Optimization. SEO CVs may be difficult to craft because of the relative youth and informality of the industry; few SEO experts have been professionally practicing Search Engine Optimization for longer than a handful of years (although many of them have been in the realm of marketing, particularly internet marketing, for decades) and have no academic training in the subject.
Because of this, an SEO CV should emphasize relevant work experience. "Relevant" is subjective, but basically, any experience in internet marketing can apply. Obviously direct experience in SEO is preferable, but anything related to SEO -- knowledge of HTML, understanding of how search engines rank results, a grasp of why search engine traffic is important to a website -- is helpful.
